She broke it. She didn't measure what was left. She poured it all out.
The alabaster jar appears in all four Gospels, across two events, four witnesses, one consistent pattern. A woman gives extravagantly. Those around her object. Jesus defends her.
In Luke, the criticism is who she is - a sinner, unworthy. In Matthew and Mark, it's the waste; it could have been sold. In John, Judas puts a number on her offering. Each time, Jesus holds the line: "Leave her alone. She has done a beautiful thing to me".
Ba Ki's illustration centres the moment of devotion. The woman from behind, braided hair, the jar given prominence, purple tones that carry the weight of something costly and royal. She could be anyone who has given more than felt safe and found themselves defended.
"Wherever the gospel is told, what she has done will be remembered." Mark 14:9
